Dental Implants

Video: How Dental Implants Work

The standard of care for replacing missing teeth used to be a partial denture or a bridge, but today dental implants frequently offer a superior solution. Dental implants can open the possibilities for natural looking crowns and bridges.

Dental implants are made of biocompatible titanium and are cylindrical in shape. Dental implants are placed below the gum line. Over a few months the bone grows securely around the implant (known as osseointegration), becoming a stable base to support individual replacement teeth, bridges or dentures.

What a Dental Implant Involves

•  Placing the Dental Implant
The implant is placed into bone. It is normal to expect three to six months to become stable. Osseointegration occurs over this time period allowing the implant to become one with the bone.
•  Attaching the Dental Implant Post
When the implant is healed a support post is attached to it and an impression is taken in order to make either a porcelain crown, bridge or denture.
•  Placing the Dental Crown or Bridge
The new crown or bridge is made from dental impressions and a color is chosen to match your existing teeth. The crown or bridge is cemented over the post. The final implant crown appears as your natural tooth.
